The Accused

March 11, 2004. Between 7:37 and 7:40 a.m., ten bombs explode on four commuter trains in Madrid. Shortly after, Ignacio Orovio was there covering the news for his newspaper; that very day he began writing this novel.

The Acussed fictionalizes how a journalist faces the horror of a terrorist attack, and through the character of Ismael Feres, a law graduate Muslim who is friend to some of the terrorists, explores the ambiguities of suspicion, rejection, belonging, and denial. All against the backdrop of political maneuvering, imminent general elections, and party divisions.
